Recent research suggests an increased risk of low birth weight babies of pregnant women who consume caffeinated beverages. Caffeine has long been linked to various side effects in pregnant women so many pregnant women avoid coffee and tea during pregnancy. However, there are some people who struggle to stop drinking coffee. All are edible and drinking by pregnant women has the potential to get into the fetus through the placenta. Because of the various health organization
recommends limiting consumption of alcohol and caffeine during pregnancy. In addition to coffee and tea, caffeine is also contained in cola, energy drinks, and chocolate.

The World Health Organization or the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting caffeine intake to 300 milligrams per day which is equivalent to approximately three cups of coffee a standard size. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 2010 states that pregnant women can consume up to 200 milligrams of caffeine per day without increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature birth.

In a recent study published in the journal BMC Medicine, researchers collected data from nearly 60,000 pregnancies over a period of 10 years. After exclusion of pregnant women with medical problems, they found no association between consumption of caffeine from food and drink - and the risk of premature birth. However, there is an association with low birth weight. This relationship remained even obtained after smoking risk factors removed.

One researcher, Dr. Verena Sengpiel Hospiral of Sahlgrenska University in Sweden said that the findings were not definitive because observational studies, and correlation does not imply causality. However, they still recommend that pregnant women stop caffeine consumption, or at least limit the amount of coffee in under two cups per day.
